Whirlpool Corporation Helps Carnegie Mellon Students Capture EPA’s Building Challenge Award

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (Dec. 15, 2008) — The Carnegie Mellon University Solar Decathlon team recently won the 2008 Environmental Protections Agency’s (EPA) Lifecycle Building Challenge Award in the “Student-Built” category. Their prize-winning entry, TriPod, is a prefabricated house alternative outfitted with Whirlpool ENERGY STAR(R) qualified appliances. The award recognizes building design and innovation that minimizes waste, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions while reusing local building materials and promoting adaptability in design.

The ‘zero-energy house’ uses passive solar conditioning, super-insulated walls and windows, daylighting and Whirlpool and KitchenAid brand energy-efficient appliances. TriPod, which also won the Outstanding Achievement Award: Best Greenhouse Gas Reduction Design, reduces the average electricity consumption by 75 to 90 percent, compared to that of a standard-built house of equal size. TriPod’s mechanical “core” manages multiple “pods” used for living cooking and sleeping spaces. As a result of this modular design, homeowners can now add or subtract pods to meet individual needs. In addition to energy savings, a prefabricated house has only minimal leakage and causes less damage to the house’s physical site.

“The EPA’s Lifecycle Building Challenge competition recognizes innovative green building and energy-efficient ways of reducing the building industry’s carbon footprint,” said Brian Kish, student construction manager of TriPod. “Whirlpool’s energy-efficient appliances were essential in meeting the goal of reducing energy consumption, a key component of the building competition. As a young architect, it’s exciting to partner with an industry leader like Whirlpool Corporation to bring sustainability to the forefront of the building industry.”

In October 2007, as part of its ongoing commitment to the development of energy- and water-efficient homes, Whirlpool Corporation contributed its KitchenAid, Maytag and Whirlpool brand appliances to four additional university teams competing in the Solar Decathlon: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Colorado at Boulder and University of Cincinnati. The Solar Decathlon is an international collegiate competition where architecture and engineering student teams compete to design, build and operate highly energy-efficient, completely solar-powered houses that incorporate building-integrated photovoltaics.

Whirlpool Corporation Takes Next Leap in Digital Design Offerings

First Appliance Manufacturer to Offer 3-D Models in the Google Dynamic Component Collection

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (Nov. 19, 2008) - Whirlpool Corporation’s dedicated program for building and design professionals, The Inside Advantage(TM), announces yet another first for the design community. The company is now the first appliance manufacturer to offer 3-D appliance models that comply with the new Google(R) SketchUp(TM) Dynamic Components standards, starting with the KitchenAid(R) Architect(R) Series II Suite.

These new 3-D appliance models, available in the Google(R) Dynamic Components Collection, provide users with easy access to information, such as SKU numbers, color and finish availability, and how each model qualifies for national green home certification programs, including ENERGY STAR(R) home and LEED(R) for Homes. Additionally, the appliance models include Web site links to more relevant product and brand information.

“As Google SketchUp continues to become more and more robust, Whirlpool Corporation is keeping pace to make the design process as easy as possible,” said Tom Halford, general manager of contract sales and marketing at Whirlpool Corporation. “We will continue to add more 3-D appliance models from our KitchenAid, as well as Jenn-Air, Whirlpool, Maytag and Gladiator brands.”

Google SketchUp is an easy-to-learn, software developed to provide quick 3-D forms for conceptual stages of design. Part of this software includes a repository of 3-D building objects that expedite the design process. As with the original 3-D appliance models offered from Whirlpool Corporation, the new KitchenAid(R) Architect(R) Series II Suite brand models in the Dynamic Components Collection provide designers and their clients the ability to visualize their designs in 3-D. This makes it easier to determine the configurations that will work best. Plus, the SketchUp models can then be converted into all major CAD products without having to draw designs twice.

As part of The Inside Advantage(TM) program, the Architecture & Design Marketing Group creates educational, informational and experiential resources and events to engage design professionals and build on their knowledge of Whirlpool Corporation’s portfolio of brands. Recent industry firsts developed by the group include the first home plan book/CD/Web site of green home designs for the housing industry, in collaboration with Alan Mascord Design Associates; the first Podcast series for architects and designers to receive continuing education (CE) credit; and the first branded appliance collections for Google(R) SketchUp(TM), AutoCAD(R), 20/20 Fusion and Chief Architect(R) CAD software users within Google’s 3D Warehouse.

Maytag(R) Commercial Technology is Finding its Home in New Performance Series Front-Load Washers and Dryers

New colors and steam options add to the appeal

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (Nov. 14, 2008) – From heavy duty springs and belts to beefed up motors and frames – the new Performance Series washers and dryers are engineered with Maytag Commercial Technology (MCT) under the hood. The commercial-grade components found within Maytag Performance Series laundry appliances ensure both strength and dependability for years of reliable performance.

“Maytag has been making washers and dryers for laundromats and high-volume commercial settings for 50 years,” said Christian Cerda, general manager for Maytag. “Incorporating commercial-grade components into our residential laundry products make Maytag brand washers last longer than any other leading brand[1].”

The new Maytag Performance Series laundry pairs are available in four bold colors – Crimson, Evergreen, Oxide and White. Most models also feature the sanitizing power of steam. The Performance Series steam dryer conveniently connects to the existing laundry-room waterline, so there is no reservoir to fill, just on-demand steam cycles with the push of a button. Inside the dryer, a small nozzle distributes a fine mist of water throughout the heated dryer as clothes tumble. The heated air combines with mist to form steam, rejuvenating a single item or outfit by removing odors and relaxing wrinkles from a few items or an entire load. Also, the dryer is NSF certified to sanitize, removing 99.9 percent of tested harmful bacteria. This feature is perfect for sanitizing things that people prefer not to wash like pillows and teddy bears.

The Maytag Performance Series is also ENERGY STAR(R) qualified, each load using 70 percent less water and 70 percent less energy than conventional top-load washers[2]. With a wash basket capacity at 4.4 cubic feet, now you can wash more laundry in every load, reducing the number of loads washed each week. Intuitive and dependable features monitor incoming water temperature and levels, aiding in energy conservation.

GentleBreeze(TM) Drying System incorporates diagonal airflow to dry clothes in the same amount of time it takes to wash them, and IntelliDry(R) sensor technology minimizes the risk of over-drying and shrinking, conserving even more energy.

Marmomacc 2008: The Global Leader in Stone, Stone Design and Stone Education

(Verona, Italy – November 3, 2008) – Marmomacc 2008, held in Verona from October 2-5, reaffirmed the show’s role as the most important global trade event for the stone sector and for stone-related design and technologies.

27,000 trade visitors from 120 countries – 45% of the 63,000 total visitors – and 1,530 exhibitors from 54 countries. Despite the economic downturn, Marmomacc managed to attract growing numbers of buyers, specifiers, architects and builders from all over the world.

Stone design continues to be one of Marmomacc’s major draws. Stone trade professionals congregate in Verona each Fall to see the impact of new technologies on design. The “Marmomacc Meets Design” (MMD) project, generated more innovative booth designs. MMD 2008 paired leading international designers with 15 stone processors. The pairings focused on this year’s theme -- stone as texture or “skin” -- in developing everything from objects to entire booth designs. This theme reflects the increasing focus among architects on selecting materials, including natural stone, on the basis of their surface texture, whether in creating objects or in cladding buildings.

Two of the MMD booths shared the Marmomacc Best Communicator Award, presented to the booths with the best visual approaches to conveying the richness and potential of stone. The winners:

-Il Casone for Claudio Silvestrin’s “Quarry” booth design; and
-PibaMarmi for Michele de Lucchi and Philippe Nigro’s “Palisade” booth design.

Silvestrin, de Lucchi and Nigro were among the many designers involved in this project who were present at Marmomacc.

A number of companies received “special mentions” from the Best Communicator Award jury for their booth designs: Vaselli Marmi, Grassi Pietre, Franchi Umberto Marmi, M+Q Italia, Henraux, Lithos Design and Iaconcig.

Other pairings for the MMD project included Mario Bellini/Mineranorge, Riccardo Blumer/Scalvini Marmi, Roberto Canovaro/Marmo Arredo, Aldo Cibic/Quarella, Stefano Giovannoni/Grassi Pietre, Massimo Iosa Ghini/Budri, James Irvine/Marsotto, Simone Micheli/Odorizzi Porfidi, Pietro Ferruccio Laviani/Citco, Pongratz Perbellini Architects/Testigroup, Marco Piva/Lasa Marmo, Denis Santachiara/Marmi Ghirardi, and Luca Scacchetti/Santa Margherita.

Marmomacc also hosted the tenth edition of Veronafiere’s continuing education programs for architects, which now includes courses in Italy, the U.S. and online. To commemorate this special anniversary, architects who had participated in previous editions of the course were invited back to take part in a special “Reunion” program that took place in Milan, Trento and Verona. A second group of architects -- from the U.S., Canada, the U.K., India, South Africa and Australia -- spent four days studying the importance of stone in modern design. Participants visited quarries in Verona and Querceta (in Tuscany, near Lucca), various stone processing facilities and even Pisa’s Piazza dei Miracoli. Nearly 50 architects participated in these programs, which are recognized by the American Institute of Architects, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, and the Royal Institute of British Architects.

The dates for Marmomacc 2009 are September 30th–October 3rd.

The home was also awarded Energy Star home certification with a HERS (Home Energy Rating System) rating of 51, a full 34 points below the Energy Star target threshold.

The Topel Residence is a hybrid construction bringing together timber framing with Structural Insulated Panels to form a framework that rests on a Superior Wall foundation. Built almost entirely off-site, little waste was generated during construction.

The focus of the design and construction team was to reduce the home’s impact on the environment by sourcing materials locally and with high recycled content, minimizing site disturbance, installing energy and water efficient systems and appliances, installing native plant landscaping and implementing innovative green building techniques that include installing a sedum planted roof, natural ventilation and rain gardens for on-site stormwater recharge.

The design team included: Matthew Moger from Lyman Perry Architects, Jonathan Alderson from Jonathan Alderson Landscape Architects, Tad Radzinski from Sustainable Solutions Corporation and Hugh Lofting and Amy Cornelius from Hugh Lofting Timber Framing, Inc and HJL Construction Management Services, LLC.

“We are very proud of this achievement and of all of the members of the construction team.” says Hugh Lofting, “Ave and Vicki Topel are wonderful clients that weren’t too sure about green construction at first but became increasingly interested and knowledgeable as the design and construction of their home proceeded. Now they are committed to green construction and green, healthy, sustainable living.”

LEED for Homes is a nationally recognized, third-party certification system that’s based on measurable results. As such, LEED for Homes recognizes the highest quality in green homebuilding. LEED certified homes are energy efficient, durable, use non-toxic building materials, are water-smart, and respect the environment in which they’re constructed.
